CHERYL GROGAN

Sports Psychologist 

A Bit About Me

Cheryl has experience working in academy football and has recently completed an MSc in Sports

Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University and is working towards becoming a registered

Sports and Exercise Psychologist via the SEPAR route.

 

She has over 10 years of experience working with stakeholders of youth athletes in sports and is currently

working as a sport psychologist (in training) at Chester Football academy. She was an Olympic Torch Bearer for the London 2012 Olympics, chosen due to her outstanding commitment to charity work and volunteering supporting youth mental health through sport and community-based activities. She also trained as a baby and toddler yoga instructor.

 

She is a natural motivator with excellent communication and interpersonal skills including patience, empathy, self-reflection and active listening. These skills have supported her well with her qualitative research data collection as she worked with the parents of youth athletes.

PLACEMENT : CHESTER FC ACADEMY

I am responsible for leading the sport and exercise psychology department. This is accomplished through workshops and one to one sessions with athletes. I use ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) integrated with counselling skills to support the players performance and wellbeing.

 

As a therapeutic approach. Furthermore, I am currently working towards culture coaching to foster a team work environment

through identifying the values of the organisation and how that feeds into each team and the coaches within the academy.

PLACEMENT : MERSEYSIDE SPORTS PARTNERSHIPS

I was responsible for investigating the needs of an athletics club and developing tools and resources to support their needs. I did this through interviewing athletes and parents of athletes across different activities within the athletics teams.

 

Followed by analysing the data and creating an intervention plan to increase footfall in teenagers, more specifically female teenagers.

2022 - Present 

TEEN WORKS - NIGHT SUPERVISING OFFICER

I am currently employed to safeguard teenage children through the night. The roles requires me to be an active listener in case there are sensitive needs of a child.

 

I am also responsible for safeguarding children and supporting their mental health. I havecompleted a vast amount of CPD surrounding teenagers and their individual needs.

 

On occasion I work of a day time to ensure the needs of the child are met. I work with a diverse range of children from various backgrounds with individual complex needs.
